U.S. stocks higher at close of trade; Dow Jones Industrial Average up 2.13%
Investing.com – U.S. stocks were higher after the close on Friday, as gains in the Basic Materials, Industrials and Technology sectors led shares higher.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 2.13%, while the S&P 500 index gained 2.28%, and the NASDAQ Composite index added 2.56%.
The best performers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Intel Corporation (NASDAQ:INTC), which rose 4.25% or 1.17 points to trade at 28.73 at the close. Meanwhile, Walgreens Boots Alliance Inc (NASDAQ:WBA) added 4.04% or 1.42 points to end at 36.61 and Dow Inc (NYSE:DOW) was up 3.99% or 2.11 points to 55.02 in late trade.

The worst performers of the session were UnitedHealth Group Incorporated (NYSE:UNH), which fell 0.01% or 0.07 points to trade at 489.89 at the close. Home Depot Inc (NYSE:HD) added 0.60% or 1.90 points to end at 317.37 and Chevron Corp (NYSE:CVX) was up 0.75% or 1.32 points to 176.56.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Costco Wholesale Corp (NASDAQ:COST) which rose 7.26% to 482.87, Old Dominion Freight Line Inc (NASDAQ:ODFL) which was up 6.83% to settle at 300.70 and IDEXX Laboratories Inc (NASDAQ:IDXX) which gained 6.82% to close at 447.77.
The worst performers were Baxter International Inc (NYSE:BAX) which was down 7.80% to 48.47 in late trade, Waters Corporation (NYSE:WAT) which lost 7.15% to settle at 322.21 and Thermo Fisher Scientific Inc (NYSE:TMO) which was down 3.94% to 535.00 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Swvl Holdings Corp (NASDAQ:SWVL) which rose 115.36% to 0.30, Medavail Holdings Inc (NASDAQ:MDVL) which was up 80.19% to settle at 0.56 and Golden Sun Education Group Ltd (NASDAQ:GSUN) which gained 77.78% to close at 2.24.
The worst performers were Fate Therapeutics Inc (NASDAQ:FATE) which was down 61.45% to 4.24 in late trade, Nabriva Therapeutics AG (NASDAQ:NBRV) which lost 44.84% to settle at 1.30 and Graphite Bio Inc (NASDAQ:GRPH) which was down 39.54% to 1.85 at the close.
Rising stocks outnumbered declining ones on the New York Stock Exchange by 2648 to 463 and 76 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 2713 rose and 1091 declined, while 136 ended unchanged.
Shares in Baxter International Inc (NYSE:BAX) fell to 5-year lows; down 7.80% or 4.10 to 48.47. Shares in Fate Therapeutics Inc (NASDAQ:FATE) fell to 5-year lows; down 61.45% or 6.76 to 4.24. Shares in Nabriva Therapeutics AG (NASDAQ:NBRV) fell to all time lows; falling 44.84% or 1.06 to 1.30. Shares in Graphite Bio Inc (NASDAQ:GRPH) fell to all time lows; falling 39.54% or 1.21 to 1.85.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was down 5.92% to 21.13.
Gold Futures for February delivery was up 1.65% or 30.45 to $1,871.05 a troy ounce. Elsewhere in commodities trading, Crude oil for delivery in February rose 0.14% or 0.10 to hit $73.77 a barrel, while the March Brent oil contract fell 0.13% or 0.10 to trade at $78.59 a barrel.
EUR/USD was up 1.18% to 1.06, while USD/JPY fell 0.99% to 132.09.
The US Dollar Index Futures was down 1.11% at 103.66.
